Case Study: Improving a Dimensionalizer Frame for Compact Shipping and Greater Stability

The Challenge

A manufacturer of dimensionalizers — systems that automatically capture the size, weight, and images of freight — asked CSI to review and improve the design of its camera support frame. The original frame used a single 14-foot steel column, which required oversized, custom crates for shipping and was costly to transport. The customer also needed solutions to:

  • Reduce the overall frame weight,
  • Improve vertical stiffness and reduce vibration, and
  • Explore more standardized, cost-effective material options

This engagement focused on design feasibility and manufacturability — not full production — and represents a work in progress.

The Solution

CSI developed a modular support-column concept that breaks the tall column into multiple interlocking pieces, enabling the entire frame to ship on a standard 4′ × 8′ pallet instead of via oversized freight.

To improve stability, CSI proposed taller lower gussets and base-plate modifications to increase rigidity and reduce oscillation once the camera assembly is mounted. Additional recommendations included:

  • Standardizing materials and hardware for more flexible sourcing options
  • Using a lighter-weight material for the camera mounting frame to ease overhead load
  • Selecting a black cover material to reduce interference from overhead lighting

The Outcome

Cost Reduction

Freight cost savings due to reduced shipping footprint and standardized packaging.

Structural Improvements

Improved rigidity via reinforcements and optimized gusset geometry.

Material Simplification

A simplified, standardized bill of materials that supports long-term cost efficiency.
